When it comes to moving house, packing is up there with the most tedious parts of the process. Moving in general takes months of planning and organising, from decluttering to sorting out your financial situation.

And once everything is (almost) ready to go, one of the last tasks to complete is packing everything in your home, ready to be transported to your new destination. While this may be an easy task for those who live alone, or are ultra organised, for us regular folk juggling family and pets- the notion of packing up all your belongings may seem like a never-ending task.

At We Buy Any House we have compiled our top tips to help you pack smoothly for your move.

An overview

Before Your Start Packing

When it comes to moving, it’s imperative to plan things massively in advance. You don’t want to leave things until the last minute, as this will only cause stress and complications for you. Making lists is the easiest way to get on top of what needs to be done, and more importantly, by when. A few things to consider include:

  1. Making a list of things that are a priority to pack. Perhaps these are bigger items that require assistance to be lifted or are delicate and need more time to be packed and prepped.
  2. If you’re moving house, why bring all the unnecessary items that you don’t need? Taking the time to declutter before you move is a great way to sift through your belongings and take only what you need. The rest you can either donate to charity, sell at a car boot sale for a bit of extra income, or take to the recycling bin.
  3. Begin to gather boxes and equipment well in advance. You may need various sizes of boxes that can accommodate different sized items, so it’s best to have these ready early. Don’t forget about tape, scissors and most importantly, labels. It’s important that you don’t overload boxes, as you don’t want to make the move any more labour intensive than necessary.
  4. It’s worthwhile checking over your insurance plan regarding contents, as you will need to make sure that any damage is covered.
  5. Ensure that any hazardous items or materials are kept separate from other items.

Saving Money for Your Move

As you well know, moving house can be quite costly. However, there are a few ways in which you can save money during the move. Here are a few budgeting hacks while you move house:

  1. It’s worthwhile getting quotes from different moving companies. This will help to ensure you get the best price for your move, and if you’re lucky, you may be able to find a company that is willing to give you a discount if you use their business.
  2. Budgeting how much you are willing to spend on the move is a good idea. This way you won’t feel ripped off by companies if the price is in your budget range.
  3. You may be able to save some money depending on your flexibility. If you opt to move mid-day or mid-week, you may be able to haggle a discount from removal services.

Hacks for Packing:

When it finally comes to packing, you’ll want to find whichever way is easiest. Packing is definitely the most time-consuming part of the move, so here are a few packing hacks that will hopefully save you some time:

  1. If you are emptying a chest of drawers or a dresser, don’t waste time emptying the whole drawer to put in a box or suitcase. Instead, take each drawer out, and wrap it in plastic wrap. This way, you won’t need to empty the drawer and put the items back once you have relocated.
  2. Instead of spending money on bubble wrap or newspaper to wrap up breakables, use soft items such as towels and bed linens to ensure that items don’t get broken.
  3. Unless you want to root around boxes to find fresh socks, a good idea is to pack a small suitcase that you can essentially live out of in between the move.
  4. It’s a good idea to take pictures of the contents of your boxes, so you can create an inventory and check that all your belongings are safe once you arrive at your new location.
  5. There’s no point taking all your clothes off the hanger just to hang them back up once you get to your new place. Instead, keep everything hung up and simply move the rail from one property to another.
