What Does the RSPCA Stand For?
The RSPCA is the world’s largest and leading animal welfare charity and stands for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Having been established since 1824, the charity works to prevent cruelty, promote kindness towards and alleviate suffering of animals.
The RSPCA’s frontline workers all pull together to help animals in greatest need across England and Wales. They have rehoming centres, wildlife rehabilitators and animal hospitals which are funded by donations to the national RSPCA, as well as their local branches.
What is the History of the RSPCA?
The RSPCA have been saving animals for nearly 200 years. Founded in a London coffee shop in 1824, a group of men created the world’s first animal welfare charity.
When the charity was first formed, it was known as the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Soon after, in 1837, Royal patronage followed when Queen Victoria gave permission to add the royal ‘R’, making them the RSPCA as they are know worldwide today.
Back in the day, the RSPCA’s focus was working animals, such as ‘pit ponies’ who were worked down the coal mines.
However, the RSPCA has evolved with the times. During WWI and WWII, they helped the millions of animals enlisted to serve alongside the British, Commonwealth and Allied forces. Today, however, the RSPCA largely focus on household pets and wildlife.
What Animals Do the RSPCA Rescue?
The RSPCA are currently the only animal welfare charity that prosecutes those who harm animals and in 2015, they secured 1,781 convictions.
RSPCA officers rescue animals most in need and offer them safety and treatment at their purpose-built centres. Once they are fit and healthy again, they are rehomed or released back into the wild.
The types of animals rescued by the RSPCA include:

- Lab animals
- Farm animals
Can Anyone Work for the RSPCA?
Each year the RSPCA get around 3,000 applications for 30 inspector vacancies, indicating how competitive it is to work for the RSPCA.
If you want to work for the RSPCA you will need at least two good GCSEs in English and preferably Biology. You will also need to be physically fit, have experience of handling animals and no allergies to them.

- Veterinary surgeon
- Veterinary nurse
- Wildlife assistant

When Do I Need to Change My RSPCA Address?
Make sure you’re prepared for moving to your new home by informing the RSPCA of your address change 2 weeks prior to your move-in date.
