Does Moving House Affect Your Credit Score? UK Guide

Does moving house affect your credit score?

Moving house doesn’t directly lower your credit score, but your score can drop if your address isn’t updated consistently across the electoral roll and your accounts. Lenders match your records by address, so mismatches or gaps in your address history make you look higher-risk until everything lines up.

The short answer

A house move itself has no direct effect on your credit file. What actually moves the needle is what happens afterwards. If your electoral roll registration, bank, and other accounts don’t all show the same current address quickly, lenders and credit reference agencies can’t verify you as easily, and that gap can nudge your score down until it’s resolved.

So the honest answer to “does changing address affect credit score” is: not by itself, but a messy transition can, and it’s entirely avoidable.

Why your address is linked to your credit score

Credit reference agencies (Experian, Equifax and TransUnion) build your credit file partly from address history. Two things matter most:

  • Electoral roll confirmation. Being registered to vote at your current address is one of the strongest identity checks a lender can run. It confirms you are who you say you are, and that you live where you say you live.
  • Consistent address history. Lenders like to see a settled, matching address across your accounts. A short or inconsistent history, sometimes described as having a credit score without three years at one address, can make you look less established, even if nothing else about your finances has changed.

When you move, both of these reset in different ways. Your electoral roll entry doesn’t automatically update with you, and your accounts won’t update themselves either. For more detail on how your address affects your credit score, see our guide to registering on the electoral roll after a move.

Does moving itself hurt your score?

No. Does moving to a new address affect your credit score on its own? Not directly. Relocating isn’t recorded as a negative event, and lenders don’t penalise you simply for having a new postcode. The risk comes from what happens during the transition, not the move itself.

What actually causes a drop after moving

If your score does dip after a move, it’s almost always down to one of these:

  • Mismatched addresses across accounts. Your bank shows one address, your credit card another, and your electoral roll a third. Lenders see inconsistency, not a full picture.
  • Not registering on the electoral roll at your new address. This is the single biggest factor. Without it, you can look unverifiable even if everything else is in order.
  • Thin or short address history. A brand new address with no track record yet can temporarily look less stable to a lender’s scoring model.
  • Bunching credit applications around the move. New broadband, a new mortgage or car finance, a new energy tariff. Several applications close together can look like financial strain even when it’s just a move.

How to protect your credit score when you move

The fix is straightforward: make sure every provider has your new address, consistently, and as soon as possible after you move.

  • Register on the electoral roll at your new address as early as you can.
  • Update your address on every account you hold, banks, credit cards, loans, so they all match.
  • Don’t leave an old address live on any account once you’ve moved.
  • Avoid stacking multiple credit applications in the weeks around your move, if you can plan around it.

Doing this manually across a dozen or more providers is where most of the inconsistency creeps in. SlothMove can update your electoral roll registration and the other providers you select in one go, so your records move in step with you instead of catching up weeks later. Lender accounts, such as your bank, credit cards and loans, currently need to be updated directly with each provider, so it’s worth working through those alongside your SlothMove update.

How long a new address affects your score, and how to recover

Most lenders and credit reference agencies update their records within a few weeks of you changing your details, though it can take up to a couple of months for everything to fully settle, particularly the electoral roll. If your score dropped after a move, check the following before assuming something’s wrong:

  • Pull a free credit report and confirm your current address shows correctly across all your accounts.
  • Check you’re registered on the electoral roll at your new address.
  • Give it a full billing cycle or two. Most address-related dips recover on their own once records catch up.

If your address still isn’t showing correctly after a couple of months, it’s worth contacting the provider directly, since that usually means an update didn’t go through rather than anything wrong with your credit itself.

Keep your address consistent, without the chasing

The single most useful thing you can do for your credit score after a move is make sure your electoral roll registration and your accounts all show the same address, as soon as possible. SlothMove can update your electoral roll registration and hundreds of other providers in one go, so you’re not logging into each one individually while you’re already busy moving.

FAQs

Will my credit score go down if I change my address?

Not automatically. Changing your address isn’t a negative mark on your file. Your score can dip if the update is inconsistent, for example if some accounts show your new address and others still show your old one, but this isn’t caused by the address change itself.

How much does moving house affect your credit score?

For most people, the effect is small and temporary, if it happens at all. A short dip is more likely if you also apply for new credit around the same time, or if your electoral roll registration lags behind your other accounts.

Why has my credit score gone down after moving house?

The most common causes are an outdated electoral roll entry, mismatched addresses across your accounts, or several credit applications close together around the move. Update your address everywhere and re-register on the electoral roll, then check your report again after a few weeks.

Does moving to a new address affect your credit score?

Only indirectly. The address itself isn’t the issue. What matters is whether your accounts and the electoral roll consistently show that address soon after you move.
