How to Change Your Address with PIP

You must remember to update your Personal Independence Payment (PIP) address when you move home. If your address is incorrect, your payments could be delayed or, worse, missed.

You can only update PIP with a change of address on the phone.

Contact PIP Directly by Phone

You can contact the PIP helpline using the numbers below:

Phone: 0800 121 4433

Textphone: 0800 121 4493

Relay Service (for speech/hearing impairments): 18001 then 0800 121 4433

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM

Before you call, have ready:

  • Your National Insurance number
  • Your PIP claim reference number
  • Your old and new address
  • The date you moved or plan to move

If You Have an Appointee or Power of Attorney

If someone holds Power of Attorney or is a registered appointee managing your PIP claim, they can update your address by contacting PIP directly using the same number above. They will need your claim reference and their own identifying details to hand.

Do I Need to Update My Address with PIP?

Yes. If you receive PIP and you have moved, or are about to, you need to update your address as soon as possible.

Why Keeping Your Address Updated Matters

  •  You will keep getting paid on time. If letters to your old address go unanswered, payments can be delayed or stopped.
  • You will not miss important letters. DWP may send renewal notices, appointment letters, or requests for further information.
  • You will stay compliant with PIP rules. Not reporting a change in circumstances, including a move, can lead to penalties or repayment requests.
  • According to Citizens Advice, incorrect personal details are one of the most common causes of benefit disruption.

What Other Changes Do I Need to Report to PIP?

Address changes are not the only thing DWP needs to know about. DWP guidance sets out the full list of changes that must be reported to avoid incorrect payments or penalties.

Changes You Must Report

  • A new address, so payments and letters reach you.
  • A change in your medical condition, since your entitlement may need reviewing.
  • A hospital stay or care home admission, which can affect your claim.
  • A change of GP, so PIP holds the right medical contact details.
  • Leaving the UK for more than 4 weeks, which can affect your payments.
  • Starting or stopping work, since some work-related changes still need reporting even though PIP is not means-tested.
  • A change in your banking details, to keep payments going to the right account.

What Happens If You Don't Report a Change?

Not reporting a change in circumstances to PIP, including a change of address, can result in:

  • Delays or stoppages in your payments.
  • Overpayments you may need to repay.
  • Penalties for failing to report a change.

Update your address with PIP directly by phone using the number above. Once that’s done, SlothMove can help with the rest of your move, including HMRC, DVLA, and the NHS, in one go.

Moving to Scotland?

PIP is being replaced by Adult Disability Payment (ADP) in Scotland. If you live in or are moving to Scotland, check whether you have already been moved onto ADP, since the process and contact details are different and managed by Social Security Scotland rather than DWP.

Who Else Needs to Know You've Moved?

Updating PIP is just one part of your moving checklist. Most people moving home also need to update their council, energy and water suppliers, the electoral roll, DVLA, HMRC, TV Licence, and their GP surgery.

  • Council, for council tax and local services.
  • Water, gas, and electricity providers, to keep billing accurate.
  • Electoral roll, to stay registered at your new address.
  • DVLA, for your driving licence and vehicle logbook (V5C).
  • HMRC, so your tax and benefit records are correct.
  • TV Licence, a legal requirement if you watch live TV or BBC iPlayer.
  • GP surgery, to keep your medical records current.

FAQs

Can I update my PIP address online?

No. PIP address changes can only be made by phone.

How long does it take for PIP to update my address?

Most updates are completed within 3 to 4 weeks, though it can take up to 8 weeks during busier periods. Call 0800 121 4433 if you want to check on progress.

What happens if I don't update my PIP address?

You could miss important letters such as renewal notices or requests for information, experience payment delays or stoppages, or face penalties or repayment requests. Update DWP as soon as you know your moving date.

Can I change my PIP address by email?

No. PIP cannot be updated by email or online. Address changes must be made by phone.

Do I need to update my bank details with PIP if I move?

Only if you are also switching bank accounts. If your bank details are not changing, you do not need to tell DWP about your move for this reason.

Can someone else update my PIP address on my behalf?

Yes. If you have a registered appointee or someone holding Power of Attorney for your benefits, they can update your address by contacting PIP directly using the number above.

Does PIP become Adult Disability Payment if I move to Scotland?

If you move to Scotland, your PIP claim may be transferred to Adult Disability Payment, administered by Social Security Scotland rather than the DWP. You should still update your address with PIP and DWP as soon as you know your moving date.

Do I need to update my address with other organisations when I move?

Yes. Alongside PIP, most people moving home also need to update HMRC, DVLA, their NHS GP surgery, their council tax office, and their TV Licence, water, and energy providers. SlothMove updates all of these for you in one go, though it cannot update PIP itself.
